This is an educational website for clinicians, teaching about pain management and the assessment of chronic pain patients for opioid and pain killer addiction. It is a comprehensive resource and is based on the latest scientific information about pain management and treatment.
The topics were developed with input from pain management professionals. The information included at this site was chosen based on clinician interests, best practices in the field and a desire to deliver health education in an interactive manner. We seek to provide ideas and strategies that help educate clinicians and improve the overall treatment and care of chronic pain while preventing opioid and pain killer addiction.
The Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM) will help clinicians identify whether a patient, currently on long-term opioid therapy, may be exhibiting aberrant behaviors associated with misuse of opioid medications, also known as pain killer addiction. In contrast, the Screener and Opioid Assessment for Patients with Pain (SOAPP) is intended to predict which chronic pain patients, being considered for long-term opioid therapy, may exhibit behaviors indicating future opioid or pain killer addiction. Since the COMM examines concurrent misuse, it is ideal for helping clinicians monitor patients' aberrant medication-related behaviors over the course of treatment.
